Dolores O’Riordan threatens to sue Zombieguide

October 3rd, 2007 by Alex

So Dolores O’Riordan-Burton is threatening to sue me. Great.

I suppose it’s about time I quit this Zombieguide thing. After all, if Mrs. Burton doesn’t appreciate the site, what’s the point in continuing to promote her career? I can find much better things with which to volunteer my time.

I have been operating under the impression that (a) I have a fair use right to operate a fan site at the domain, (b) that this is a non-commercial site, and (c) that the existence of a fan site at does not harm Mrs. Burton’s reputation (and in fact, promotes it). But I guess the Burtons don’t agree.

I am not sure what damages Burton seeks, because as far as I know, this site has done nothing but support her career and provide a place for thousands of fans to discuss the works of The Cranberries and related projects. I started writing for (and eventually took over) this site out of a deep respect (which I still have) for The Cranberries’ and O’Riordan’s catalog of creative work. I never really had any intentions other than to pay respect to that.

As per Mrs. Burton’s apparent wishes, the most popular online forums for discussing her band and solo career are now closed.

It’s been a fun nine years doing Zombieguide. Unending thanks to everyone who’s been supportive over the years. I’d like to thank each of you individually, but there just isn’t enough time in a day.

Feel free to put your goodbyes in the forums.

Reminder: Arkitekt London gigs start next week

October 3rd, 2007 by Alex

EP Release

You may hear something familiar about Arkitekt: the trademark ringing guitars and fluid melodies bear the unmistakable imprint of guitarist Noel Hogan’s years with one of the world’s most successful bands, The Cranberries, combined with the production and mixing skills of one Mr. Bernard Butler. Arkitekt’s new music sounds fresh and different too, from Noel Hogan’s subtle electronic touches and inventive programming, to the haunting and beautiful voice of front-man and co-writer Richard Walters.

Click Here To hear a 2 min mp3 stream of the title track ‘Black Hair’.

The ‘Black Hair’ EP available on iTunes Oct 29th.

Exclusive acoustic shows at the Enterprise in Camden, London NW1 on October 10, 18 & Nov 6. Tickets £6 in advance, £7 on the door or £10 (post incl.) for ticket + CD EP. Buy tickets online.

Win one of 5 signed copies of Arkitekt’s “Black Hair”

September 15th, 2007 by Alex

Noel Hogan and Richard Walters are getting ready to roll out Arkitekt’s brand new song and EP release, “Black Hair” on October 29. The new 3-song EP was mixed by legendary Suede guitarist Bernard Butler, who put an unexpected edge on the new tracks.

“They’re a lot rawer than the demo versions would have been on MySpace, I think a lot harder, which was the whole idea. When I spoke to Bernard, I explained what direction I wanted to go in, because the first album was a more polished sound than these tracks that we finished now,” Noel explained on Limerick’s Live 95 radio station earlier this year.

This’ll be Noel and Richard’s first release under the Arkitekt name, to distinguish it from Noel’s multi-singer project and first solo album Mono Band. This is Noel’s first single since “Run Wild” (feat. Alexandra Hamnede) from the Mono Band album released in 2005.

You can listen to the studio version of the single “Black Hair” on MySpace (don’t forget to add Noel as a friend!) and demo versions of all 3 EP tracks on

“Black Hair” will be available for sale on iTunes starting on October 29.

You can catch Arkitekt performing LIVE in London, with three dates announced starting next month:

  • Oct 10 2007 8:00P
    The Enterprise London
  • Oct 18 2007 8:00P
    The Enterprise London
  • Nov 6 2007 8:00P
    The Enterprise London

Now then, to celebrate this new release, Zombieguide and Arkitekt are giving away 5 copies of the “Black Hair” EP on CD, signed by Noel Hogan.

To enter…

  1. Make a post in the “Official ‘Black Hair’ Contest Thread” on the Zombieguide Forums. All you need to do is post one fact about Arkitekt. You can visit the Arkitekt Official Site, MySpace, or Zombieguide news archives if you need help. We’ll even let you cheat and ask for help in the Zombieguide Forums (but post in a different thread, please).
  2. Repeats will be deleted, so be original or do some research.
  3. Make sure you have a working email address in your profile.

Five random users will be chosen on October 31 and we will announce the winners as soon as we confirm all five. If a winner does not respond to email within 3 days, we reserve the right to pick a runner-up.

Best of luck and expect plenty more Arkitekt news as the new release and tour dates come forth!

Sanctuary Records closes; Dolores without a label?

September 6th, 2007 by Alex

The UK’s The Guardian reports today that Universal Music has decided to shut down the Sanctuary Records UK label, leaving Dolores O’Riordan without a record label.

This closure follows Sanctuary’s closing of its US division at the end of June.

Universal Music bought Sanctuary, which has been having financial struggles for the past few years, for 44.5 million pounds in August.

Universal said in a statement, “Sanctuary Records UK division will no longer continue as a stand-alone, frontline record label. Consultations with employees have begun to minimise redundancies as a result of the restructuring.”

Billboard reviews “When We Were Young”

August 18th, 2007 by Alex

Music industry magazine Billboard has given a favorable review to “When We Were Young,” the new second single from Dolores O’Riordan’s Are You Listening? Here’s what they had to say:

When We Were Young
Producer(s): Dolores O’Riordan, Richard Chycki
Genre: POP
Label: Sanctuary

The first solo single from Cranberries vocalist Dolores O’Riordan, “Ordinary Day,” was an elegant bow for her album “Are You Listening,” reminiscent of pop classic “Linger.” Enough of that, eh? Follow-up “When We Were Young” is a closer reminder of her “Zombie” signature, with vocal octave-jumping and a haughty gambol between electric guitars and percussion. Radio hesitated to react the first time around, but with the brassy approach of “Young,” O’Riordan has potential to charm adults who know her on a first-name basis. Active rock, as seldom as it indulges the ladies, would also do well to usher this talent back to active duty. —Chuck Taylor

Avril Lavigne chooses Cranberries, Marilyn Manson

August 17th, 2007 by Saeed

Target is releasing a compilation album with 10 songs chosen by Avril Lavigne as part of their series, “Influences”. One of the songs listed is “Dreams” by The Cranberries. This may catch a few Cranberries fans off guard.

Another complete shocker is her decision to include “This Is The New Shit” by Marilyn Manson - seeing that this is a target release it will most probably be the censored version.

There are also the not-so surprising appearances by punk bands Blink-182 and The Distillers on the compilation.
